Alan Freed
Cleveland, Rock n Roll & Alan Freed
Alan Freed came to be a Cleveland DJ by way of Akron Ohio. He first spun records at the WJW radio station in 1951 using the name
"Moondog".
In March 1952 Freed organized a concert which he dubbed "The Moondog Coronation Ball". Unfortunately the first Ball never happened as many more rock
n rollers showed up than the arena could handle. This non-event is actually considered to be the first rock concert.
Happily enough there were many more Moondog Coronation Balls with the tradition continuing to this day. I've attended this concert and
immensely enjoyed listening to the artists from the '50s and '60s. This years Moondog Coronation Ball will be on March 28th. 2009 at
Quicken Loans Arena.
